Ladies that Lunch

March 31, 2010

My Dream Day:

Spend the morning gyming.

Spend the lunchtime ‘Lunching’

Spend the afternoon baking.

Spend the evening sleeping.

Oh that sounds dreamy….I really enjoyed the Lunching part of my day today! No-one in my family ever goes out to lunch really (we tend to go out in the evening – even our Christmas dinner is a 7pm affair) so it was quite a treat!

My mum and I went to a new restaurant (well, newish) which we’d never been to before..but we thought it was worth a shot :) The inside decor was lovely, really light and fresh and modern – but the place was packed! Who’d have thought, Wednesday lunchtimes are the new Saturday night, blates :P But hey, busy-ness is good – a bad place wouldn’t be packed! I was glad I booked :)

The menu was all quite meaty, which isn’t the best for people like my mum and I – we eat fish and birds, but not red meat. But saying that, we still had lots to choose from:

While we waited for the food, I had half a piece of bread:

I’m not usually a restaurant bread eater (bread is just ‘blah’ to me!), but this stuff was warm, fresh, with a verrrry soft inside and crunchy crust – I had another bit after that piece :)

After we finished the bread, my mum tested me on some psychology revision..isn’t she a star!?

I love her :)

Anyway, then came the real food! My mum hadn’t reaaally wanted a starter, but I hd my eye on one thing, so we decided to split it – Southend cockle and cauliflower fritters, curried butternut squash. That’s never something I’d normally pick on a menu – hence why I did!! I wanted to branch out :) Plus, I thought if the fritters were gross, at least there’s the butternut :P Here it is:

My portion (about a 1/3 in the end – I went back for a bit more :D ):

It was DELICIOUS!! Deep frying sure isn’t my preferred method of cooking, so I didn’t care as much for the outside of the fritters (I suppose that defeats the point a bit!?), but the inside was lovely. The squash was amazing too – so flavourful! And whatever the black things were – jumbo raisins maybe? – they were a super compliment to the dish. Very impressed!

For our mains, my mum and I shared again. We each ordered our own thing, then split everything in half when it arrived. My mum had Breast and thigh of guinea fowl,  rosti potato, sticky red cabbage, & honey roast parsnips:

Amaze! I’ve never had guinea fowl, but it’s like a better version of chicken; softer and more flavah packed. Definetly want that again! The cabbage was beautiful too, very sticky and very sweet. I’ve no idea what they put in it, but it was amazing! And the honey roast parsnips…judging by my meals every day, I bet you can guess my opinion on them :P The only bit I didn’t care for was the potato rosti :( I tried it, but potatoes (bar sweet ones) just aren’t my thing.

For my main, I had crispy seabass, porcini risotto, and maple-glazed chicken wings:

WELL. Where do I start!? Very soft fish, a nice maple thing going on with the chicken…but that risotto – OH MY DAYS! SO GOOD! I’ve never had such a delicious risotto in my life!! It was very strongly flavoured, quite cheesy almost. But it was truly unbelievably amazing :) I loved every bite! I probably had about 1/3 of what was there of the risotto, cos it was very rich; but worth every bite :)

Good meal :) We were perfectly full afterwards, so skipped dessert and instead just had a little gossip about the very loud, very money/mobile-orientated, very posh people next to us :P

Oh, and before I forget – look at the cute picture they had on the ladies’ bathroom door, to show it was for ladies:

Hehe!!

After the meal, we ran a few errands – bought some spinach, purchased a shed load of easter eggs for my sister, the usual! – and then headed home. My mum had clients and I had the horses to do, which was a naaaasty job – SO COLD! I was out in my hat, scarf and gloves! I think Chika was a bit on the nippy side too, cos I when I brought their hay out, she was going mad in the field, bucking and leaping :P BLESS!!

I had a hot chocolate to warm up when I came in, and then had a lovely simple dinner:

Stir fried chicken (with leek, garlic and soy sauce), and roast squash, parsnip and chickpeas – coated in agave, cinnamon, cumin and coriander.

Delicious!!

I’ll probably have  my usual snack in the evening too :)

Out of curiosity, when you go to a restaurant, what do you order? For example, I used to always order chicken dishes – but now I’m trying to branch out, hence the guinea fowl and cauliflower fritters :) Do you stick to what you know you’ll like, or try different things?

Food for thought, as they say :) Have a good evening!

Mood Swings

March 31, 2010

Good morning!

I’m a bit early today aren’t I…and for good reason – my mamma and I are ‘Doing Lunch’ today, so I thought I’d post now, then post later on as usual with the beautiful meal I will have consumed. At least I hope it’s a beauty, I’ve never been there before…but if you’re interested in a sample menu:http://www.thecrownatwoodbridge.co.uk/page/menu Go mad!

Ok, so why the mood swings, I hear you ask?

WELL.

I’m going to moan about my laptop (again) – I woke up happy and energised. I looked out of the window and saw wind and rain, and felt disapointed – I was thinking about doing 8miles today, but I didn’t want to in that weather! So, I re-routed to Plan B – DVDs! Happy mood back again :) I managed to do about 1/2hour (whilst watching Deal or No Deal; not such a good game today :( ), before my blasted laptop gave up playing DVDs and point blank refused! Enter angry mood. I tried for about 10-15mins to get it to work, but alas, it would not. Enter major FRUSTRATED mood.

Cos I was feeling so mad at the world, I decided to go and pound out my frustration on the roads, so I set out for a 2.4mile run, sans Garby (I was too angry to wait for it to find signal). It did the trick!! I came back feeling much more refreshed, although a little grossed out too – someone had hit a pheasant so hard on the roads that its leg was about 2m from the body….NICE!

Mentally I felt better, but phsyically, MY GOSH was I cold!! It was all black clouds, strong wind and showery rain while I was running, and I swear it was about -15 degrees :p BBRR!!

Being cold however did not dent my desire for a big cold Green Monster smoothie/thickie :D

I started with frozen banana:

Then frozen mango:

Then frozen raspberries:

Then cottage cheese, spinach and nutmeg and a splash of milk and water:

Topped with a tsp of apple sauce and some cacoa nibs:

It looks disgusting but it was SO GOOD! Cold, thick, smooth, full of freshness; it was EXACTLY what I needed :D

On the side, I had 1/2 cup of All-Bran/Soya and Linseed Bran, and 1tbsp Grape Nuts:

Aaaahh, I feel so full of nutrients and health now :)

Ok, I need to go and get ready my lunch date! Don’t you love mother/daughter time!? It’s my favourite thing to do (though mother/daughter/sister time is just as good :D ) but it rarely happens cos my mum is always so busy; I pretty much had to book myself into her diary after I saw a free space :P Anyone else just love quality time with their mum’s!?

Anyways yes, I need to dash! Have a good HUMP DAY!!

Recipe books? Who needs them? There are BLOGS!

March 30, 2010

Gosh darnit I hate my laptop. It’s done the old dying trick twice today :( The second time happened whilst I was eating my dinner and watching episode 3 of Lipstick Jungle – seriously Mrs Laptop – NOT NECESSARY!!

Ok, happier times now!

I thought I’d begin by sharing with y’all the delight that I baked today – chocolate chip coconut pecan bars, off of Allie’s blog!

I followed the recipe pretty much exactly, apart from that I just used good quality dark chocolate instead of carob chips. I won’t list the recipe – you’ll have to check out Allie’s blog :D – but here are some pictures…

Good times!!

I broke off bits while I was cutting it up, and gotta say…they tasted pretty darn good! Thankyou Allie!! I want to save them for my mum’s lunches though (yes, I make my mum a packed lunch for work :) ) so they’ll be going in the freezer!

In other news, the weather brightened up so the horses got to run around naked again – they made the most of it by getting muddy:

Chika loves the mud – but even the precious princess that is Tig got down and dirrty today!!

Adorable!

After I’d finished sorting them all out and done a bit more revision, I was ready for my afternoon snack. A hot chocolate and a piece of homemade cinnamon raisin bread, half spread with a bit of apple sauce:

I was so glad I found it :) I baked this aaagggges ago, but had totally forgotten about this last slice which had been hiding itself away deep in the freezer. Don’t you just love it when you find treasure in the freezer!??

For dinner, I was craving sweetness. Which meant my beloved sweet potato, baked with cinnamon, garlic salt, agave and a new edition – desiccated coconut!

I saw Tina do this yesterday and I thought it sounded too good to miss – who needs to buy recipe books when you can get all the inspo you need just reading a blog? And even better, it’s FREEEE! Win.

I also had [a bit too much....] squash, leek and parsnip (roasted with agave, cinnamon, s+p and agave and thyme), and trout - panfried with a shallot and garlic, and a good glug of balsamic vinegar (which caremalized before I could take a pic :P ). All together:

The trout was very soft and sweet, it went perfectly with the sweet veg :D

Gosh I love dinner. So many fantastic flavahz, it’s the perfect way to end the day :D

Actually my all time favourite evening snack is the ULTIMATE way to end the day – something which I’ll enjoy as soon as Supersize vs Superskinny is over :D

Is that programme shown in the US? It’s super – they have a super skinny trade diets in a feeding clinic with a super sizer, so they have to eat EXACTLY what the other eats….the programme also investigates some diet trends, visits super super large people in the US, as a kind of inspiration to the larger people to lose weight, and follows 4 anorexics on the road to recovery. It’s such a good show! Plus the doctor who does it (Dr Jessen) is PUMPED – he is so ripped and so tall and really quite the fox :P

Anyway, I’m going to finish watching it now :) I need to concentrate!

Be sure to come back tomorrow though; my mum and I are going to be Ladies of Leisure for a few hours, and ‘do lunch’ in a nice restaurant in town :D Can’t wait!

Have a good evening :)

Lies, Lies, Lies

March 30, 2010

Gah, the rain was still pouring when I woke up this morning!

Actually, I totally just lied. I had time to get the horses in, THEN it started to pour. I think I rescued them from the field just in time, poor babies!!

As it was so rainy, I figured today was a good DVD day – approx. 1hour of Jillian and Davina and Pump…awesome :D Especially since I worked out today that I can watch the TV and play the DVDs at the same time (on my laptop) – cos I’ve done the DVDs so often I know all the routines off by heart, so I don’t even need to watch or listen (well, only a bit). Soooo, this morning was just me bouncing around my living room, whilst watching Noel Edmonds and some policeman bloke win £35,000 on Deal or No Deal (after he dealt, the next three boxes he hit were the top 4! £250k, £100k, £75k and £50k – fab game!!). Does anyone else watch that show? I used to watch it religiously, then I stopped…but since it was shown during my workout hour, I might become  a regular viewer again……

Anyway! Food stuff yeh? I had my usual pre-workout stuff, but for breakfast, I was different…..

I was feeling inspired by Eater Not A Runner, so I decided to make a big thick smoothie thing!

I put half a frozen banana and half a fresh banana in the blender, along with mango (frozen and fresh – it was BOGOF at Waitrose – so obviously I lied again, there WAS a bargain there yestderday!!), frozen raspberries, spinach and a splash of milk, then blended away:

My gosh, Mr Blender was NOT enjoying himself, it took foreeevverrr to get it blended, everything kept getting stuck :( But the result was DELIGHTFUL!

Seriously, don’t be afraid of the spinach – you can’t taste it in the least :D It just tasted fruity and thick and wonderful :)

For my carbs and protein, I had a wholewheat organic English muffin, half spread with apple sauce, and half with peanut butter:

Topped with Greek yogurt (Allie, I cannot thankyou enough for introducing me to such a concept in your blog!), and Grape Nuts/cacao nibs on the apple side, and Nature’s Path Blueberry/Cinnamon cereal on the other:

SO TASTY! I love the crunch of the Grape Nuts, it’s all so good. And you can’t go wrong with cinnamon flavah, PB and Greek yogurt :) I had the rest of the pot on the side too.

The only downside to this meal (bar the fact that it was over too quickly) was that it was SO filling – hence, it’s now lunchtime, and I’ve delayed cooking anything for as long as possible cos I am SO STUFFED!! But I did have lunch – roasted ketchup broccoli, cherry tomatoes, a tiny bit of leftover squash and parsnip, and 2 mushrooms:

As well as scrambled egg with a bit of butter, on toast, with mild korma curry blend:

Tasty – I NEVER have eggs! But I do have a bit of a stomach ache now :( Maybe I should have a square of chocolate…..

Hope you’re having a good Tuesday; mine just got a little worse, as I smashed my jar of garlic salt :’(

It went all over the floor too…the kitchen really smells of garlic now :/

Ah well, at least the weekend is almost here!! Have a good afternoon :)

Sweet or Savoury?

March 29, 2010

Good evening! Actually that should probably be Miserable-Crappy-Evening…is it raining everywhere else too!? Pretty much every single blog I’ve read today has mentioned rain, it seems like a world-wide phenomenon at the moment.

Oh well, it’s not like I was running around outside this afternoon, so no loss :) I was at Waitrose! Except the Waitrose near this home is pretty inferior when compared to the one near my uni home…they only do individual pots of 2% Greek for one thing (not the nice big 500g ones, which are cheaper, g for g!), they don’t seem to stock my beloved crown prince/kabocha squash, they didn’t have BRUSSEL SPROUTS, they had NO bargains…AND you had to pay to park. Quite shameful really.

On my way back, I stopped at a farm shop I havn’t been to before, and thank goodness I did! I picked up a BEAST of a crown prince (it was proper massive!) for…wait for it…THIRTY FIVE PENNIES! Yes, 35p, for a HUGE squash that would normally cost me about £3-4 in the supermarket. That purchase sure made my day :)

While we’re on the subject, does anyone have any good budget or money saving tips? My top tip is always go to the ‘reduced to clear’ section of a supermarket first where they’re trying to throw everything out, cos most of the time the produce is fine anyway :) I also think that in general, use by dates can be ignored..the amount of times I’ve had yogurts that have been weeks passed their dates…it saves waste! And with veggies, even if they look a bit skank, 99% of the time it gets cooked away – waste not, want not!

Anyway:

I snacked on a hot chocolate and some lovely lemon curd flavour biscuits when I got home:

They have a super list of ingredients: wheatflour, cane sugar, lemon curd (sugar, egg, butter, lemon pulp, lemon oil), lemon oil, lemon juice, bicarb of soda. I love it; all those ingredients are things regular people could have in their house – no crap! Hooray :)

For dinner, I simply had to re-do my oatmeal…after the baked oatmeal experiment this morning, I just felt like my daily oatmeal craving wasn’t quite satisfied. It had to be done!!

So I made up a batch of oats (1/2 cup) cooked with 1cup of water, to which I added the rest of the sheep’s milk cheese and a bunch of veg (cooked in cinnamon and garlic) – squash, broccoli and parsnip.

Then, to be a little different, I topped it with grated cacoa, and 1tbsp Grape Nuts!

Bless my oatmeal, it was a little confused – was it sweet or savoury!?

I can tell you now though, that chocolate, crunch, cheese, vegetables and garlic all go very well together :D Weird combinations are the best, IMHO.

Righto, I have 4 things left to do this evening now:

1) Revise (BOOOOO)

2) Read (my new book, my newspaper, my Waitrose magazine <- I’m very cool, no? LOL I realised last night, when I finished my old book, that it’s taken me since Christmas to read just two regular paperbacks. I get through about 3 chapters  a week!)

3) Eat my evening snack

4) Watch the last ten minutes of Lipstick Jungle (anyone seen that? I’m on episode two..it’s yet to grow on me….).

Oooh, and I’ll add a number 5 too!

5) Ask if anyone knows where you can watch vintage ER online, for free!? My sister lost the last disc of the boxset…DISASTER!

Have a good evening :)
